CAPE COD CANAL CLEAN UP

On the last Saturday of September the Salties get together to pick up litter along the Cape Cod Canal. The day starts with coffee and donuts, the organization of the teams to do the cleanup, and finally to the great barbecue of sausages/peppers/onions and burgers in the afternoon prepared by fellow Salties members. It is a beautiful day to participate in a marine ecosystem project and getting thanked by fellow fisher people and walkers and runners and bikers at the same time.

HERRING RUN CLEAN-UP

The Salties have taken on the special project of maintaining the Yarmouth herring run between Swan Pond and Long Pond. This run is often filled with fallen branches, trees, and other debris. Each spring Salties volunteers take on the task of maintaining this historic run to encourage the return of river herring to Long Pond. Members will need either waders or hip boots, iron or clam rake, bush cutters, and gloves. In addition one or two chain saws are usually required. Many hands make light work.

LONG POND HERRING LADDER COUNT

Each Spring the Salties in collaboration with the Town of Yarmouth Department of Natural Resources and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, visually count the number of herring returning to Long Pond. Volunteer Salties agree to count and record the number of fish ascending the Long Pond Fish Ladder during their assigned time. Eighty to 90 minute blocks are assigned each day of the week between April 1st and the end of May and the volunteer(s) chose 10 minute blocks within them. If you would like to participate but have not done it before any of the experienced members would be happy to train anybody willing. Shifts are very short and you get to have some fun as well.
